This sex toy materials guide explains why the material label is only the beginning of a proper product assessment.
Knowing whether a pleasure product is made from silicone, glass, stainless steel or ABS plastic is useful. It does not, however, tell you everything about its quality, care or suitability.
Two products described as “silicone” can differ in formulation, surface finish, flexibility, seams and construction. A device listed as ABS plastic may have a silicone covering, painted finish or soft-touch coating. “Jelly” may describe how a product feels rather than identify what it is actually made from.
A better comparison considers the complete product:
- the exact body-contact material,
- coatings, pigments and decorative finishes,
- surface quality, seams and joins,
- intended use and dimensions,
- cleaning and lubricant instructions,
- manufacturer traceability, and
- the evidence supporting material and safety claims.
The international standard ISO 3533:2021 addresses both materials and design for manufactured products intended for direct genital or anal contact. That distinction matters: a suitable material can still be let down by poor construction, an unsuitable shape or unclear instructions.
Sex toy materials guide: what to check before buying
Before choosing a pleasure product, look beyond the main material name and check the following details.
Exact material
Terms such as silicone, glass, stainless steel and ABS should be specific enough to help you understand the product. Vague descriptions such as “soft material,” “premium rubber” or “realistic feel” are not enough on their own.
Body-contact surface
The material listed in the specifications may describe only the internal structure. The surface that touches the body could be silicone, paint, metallic plating, a soft-touch coating or a combination of several materials.
Seams and joins
Deep gaps, rough joins and poorly sealed seams can make cleaning more difficult. Pay particular attention to areas around buttons, charging points, removable parts and decorative inserts.
Surface condition
The surface should be smooth and stable. Cracks, chips, peeling coatings, sharp edges, deep scratches or unexplained tackiness are reasons to stop using a product.
Construction and intended use
A suitable material does not make every shape appropriate for every use. Products intended for anal insertion need an effective flared base or retrieval design, while motorised products require careful attention around controls, charging ports and seals.
Documentation and traceability
Clear manufacturer information, model details, care instructions and appropriate technical documentation are stronger than unsupported marketing language.
What does “body-safe” actually mean?
“Body-safe” sounds reassuring, but the phrase alone does not identify a material, test method or recognised universal certification.
It does not tell you:
- which polymer, metal or glass was used,
- whether the product has a coating,
- which pigments, additives or plasticisers are present,
- how the surface was finished,
- whether seams or bonded parts can retain residue,
- what type and duration of contact the product was designed for, or
- which documentation supports the claim.
A supplier repeating “body-safe” in a product feed is not strong evidence by itself. More useful information includes:
- an exact material declaration,
- the manufacturer’s identity and model number,
- model-specific care and lubricant instructions,
- relevant declarations or test reports,
- information about coatings and additional materials,
- appropriate warnings and intended-use information, and
- traceable product and economic-operator details.
For products sold in the European Union, the General Product Safety Regulation provides the wider framework for consumer-product safety and traceability.
A responsible product description should still explain the materials and care requirements in language customers can understand rather than relying on one reassuring phrase.
Claims that need evidence
Some common product claims may be meaningful, but only when they are supported properly.
Medical-grade silicone
This claim should identify the grade, standard or evidence being relied upon. The phrase should not be used only because the product feels smooth or expensive.
Phthalate-free
This should be supported by manufacturer documentation or testing. It addresses particular chemicals, not the complete quality, durability or cleanability of the product.
Non-toxic
This term is too broad without information about the test method, exposure conditions and intended use.
Hypoallergenic
No product should be presented as hypoallergenic without evidence that applies to the complete product, including coatings, pigments and additional materials.
Antibacterial
This claim should explain which substance or treatment creates the effect and how it was tested.
Silicone sex toys
Silicone is widely used across vibrators and wands, dildos, plugs, couples’ products and external stimulators. Depending on its formulation and construction, it can feel soft, firm, flexible or highly structured.
Do not assume that every product described as silicone is made entirely from one solid piece of silicone.
It may instead be:
- silicone covering an ABS frame,
- silicone overmoulded around a motor,
- a thin silicone coating,
- silicone combined with metal or plastic controls, or
- a product with exposed joins and charging contacts.
What to inspect
- The surface should be even and free from peeling, cracks or unexplained tackiness.
- Seams should be closed and easy to clean around.
- Buttons and charging areas should not create deep, inaccessible gaps.
- The product page should distinguish between the body-contact surface and internal structure.
- Waterproofing and cleaning claims should come from the manufacturer.
Lubricant compatibility
Water-based lubricant is usually the most broadly compatible starting point for silicone-covered products. Silicone-based and hybrid formulas should only be used when the exact product manufacturer permits them.

Glass sex toys
Glass products are chosen for their smooth surface, firmness, weight and ability to feel cooler or warmer than soft materials.
“Glass” is still an incomplete specification. Look for:
- the type of glass,
- confirmation that the product was manufactured for intimate use,
- a smooth, uninterrupted body-contact surface,
- any decorative coating, paint or bonded element,
- appropriate dimensions and base design,
- care instructions, and
- protective storage.
Borosilicate glass is a more precise description than simply “glass,” but the word alone does not replace inspection or careful construction.
Check a glass toy before each use. Do not use it if you notice:
- chips,
- cracks,
- deep scratches,
- sharp areas, or
- loose decorative elements.
Do not expose glass products to extreme or sudden temperature changes unless the manufacturer explicitly provides instructions for doing so.
Stainless-steel sex toys
Stainless-steel products provide firm pressure and more weight than silicone or ABS. Because the material does not compress, dimensions and product weight deserve particular attention.
When browsing dildos and penetrative toys made from metal, check:
- whether the product is solid stainless steel or only metal-plated,
- the steel grade if a specific grade is claimed,
- the product’s total weight,
- welds, joins and removable components,
- surface polish and edges,
- decorative coatings,
- the base or handle design, and
- manufacturer care instructions.
A silver-coloured surface does not prove that a product is solid stainless steel. It may be plated plastic, aluminium or another alloy.
Claims such as “304 stainless steel” or “316 stainless steel” should be supported by manufacturer specifications rather than inferred from appearance.
ABS plastic and coated devices
ABS is a hard, lightweight plastic commonly used in motor housings, handles, controls, remote devices and internal frames.
In many products, ABS is not the only material that touches the body. The outer surface may include:
- silicone overmoulding,
- a rubberised soft-touch coating,
- paint,
- metallic plating,
- decorative inserts, or
- seams where several materials meet.
For that reason, “ABS plastic” should not be treated as the complete answer to material or lubricant compatibility.
Inspect:
- the edges of coatings,
- areas around controls,
- battery covers,
- charging contacts,
- bonded parts, and
- deep scratches or worn finishes.
Stop using the device if its body-contact coating starts to peel, crack, become sticky or expose the material beneath it.
TPE, TPR and “jelly” are not one material
TPE, TPR and “jelly” are often placed in one retail category because they tend to feel soft and rubber-like. They should not be treated as though they identify one identical substance.
TPE refers to a broad family of thermoplastic elastomers. Different formulations can have different flexibility, additives, surface behaviour and durability.
TPR is commonly used as a broad commercial term for thermoplastic rubber-like materials and can overlap with parts of the wider TPE family. The label still does not reveal the complete formulation.
Jelly is usually a retail description of texture or appearance rather than a sufficiently precise material declaration.
For any soft or realistic-feel product, ask:
- What is the exact material?
- Does the manufacturer describe its porosity?
- Which lubricant is permitted?
- Can the surface be cleaned reliably?
- Does it require separate storage?
- Does it attract dust or lint?
- Has it developed odour, tackiness or discolouration?
- How frequently does the manufacturer recommend replacement?
Do not assume every TPE or TPR formulation behaves identically. At the same time, do not treat a vague “soft-touch” or “realistic” label as sufficient product information.
Phthalate claims
EU REACH rules restrict DEHP, DBP, BBP and DIBP in many articles when their individual or combined concentration is 0.1% or more by weight of the plasticised material, subject to the regulation’s scope and exemptions.

A “phthalate-free” claim should still be supported by documentation. It does not describe porosity, surface quality, seams, durability or the presence of other additives.
Porous materials, cleaning and sharing
Porosity is not always obvious from a photograph or from how smooth a product feels. A soft material can contain microscopic spaces or surface irregularities that make reliable cleaning more difficult.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact product. Do not assume that every silicone product can be boiled, every glass product can be placed in a dishwasher or every motorised toy can be submerged.
Electronics, coatings, bonded parts and charging areas can change what is appropriate even when the main material tolerates a particular cleaning method.
If a product is shared
The NHS advises washing shared sex toys between each use and applying a new condom each time. Planned Parenthood similarly advises using a new condom when a toy moves between people or between different body areas.
For a soft product that cannot be cleaned reliably, the more cautious choice is not to share it.
If it is shared:
- use a new condom for every person,
- change the condom before moving between body areas,
- clean the product according to its instructions after use,
- inspect the surface before using it again, and
- replace it if it becomes damaged, sticky, cracked or difficult to maintain.
A condom reduces direct contact with the surface. It does not transform a porous, degraded or poorly constructed product into a non-porous one.
Surface quality and construction
Material quality cannot compensate for poor construction.
Before first use and regularly afterwards, inspect:
- seams and bonded joins,
- cracks and splits,
- chips or sharp edges,
- deep scratches,
- peeling paint or plating,
- unexplained tackiness,
- changes in odour,
- discolouration,
- loose bases or handles,
- damaged buttons, and
- exposed charging components.
Stop using a product when its body-contact surface is damaged or its construction no longer feels secure.
Anal toys need suitable design as well as material
A smooth material does not make every object appropriate for anal use.
Products in anal toys and prostate massagers should have a base or retrieval design that remains accessible and prevents the insertable section from moving fully inside the body.
Before choosing one, compare:
- maximum diameter,
- insertable length,
- taper,
- rigidity or flexibility,
- product weight,
- surface finish,
- base dimensions, and
- manufacturer lubricant and care guidance.
The base should be meaningfully wider than the insertable section. A small decorative ring or slight widening should not automatically be treated as an adequate retrieval design.
Leather, metal hardware and sensory accessories
Products such as cuffs, collars, harnesses and other BDSM and fetish accessories require different material checks from insertable toys.
Consider:
- whether the material is leather, synthetic leather, textile or an elastomer,
- edge finishing and stitching,
- rivets, buckles and metal joins,
- whether hardware can pinch or scrape,
- how the product can be cleaned,
- whether absorbent materials are intended for sharing, and
- whether the product can be released quickly.
Leather and fabric cannot be cleaned in the same way as glass, steel or silicone. Care instructions should match the actual material.
How to assess a product page
A useful product page should answer:
- What is the body-contact material?
- Is the material solid, coated or overmoulded?
- Which other materials are exposed?
- What are the full and insertable dimensions?
- What is the intended use?
- Which lubricant does the manufacturer recommend?
- How should the product be cleaned?
- Can it be submerged?
- Who manufactured it?
- What evidence supports claims such as medical-grade, phthalate-free or hypoallergenic?
If the page relies on words such as “premium,” “luxury,” “body-safe” or “non-toxic” without answering those questions, the information is incomplete.
Choosing by feel and use
For a softer, flexible surface
Consider clearly documented silicone or a precisely identified elastomer. Check the flexibility, surface finish, care instructions and lubricant guidance.
For firm, smooth pressure
Consider glass or documented stainless steel. Pay close attention to dimensions, weight and rigidity because these materials do not compress like softer products.
For a lightweight motorised product
ABS construction can be practical, but the body-contact surface should be identified clearly. Inspect coatings, seams and areas around controls.
For a weighted sensation
Solid stainless steel or glass may be suitable. Compare the exact weight and dimensions before buying.
For a soft, realistic feel
Look for a precisely identified TPE or TPR product with clear care, storage and replacement guidance.
For anal use
Choose a product designed specifically for anal use with an effective flared base or retrieval design.

Is silicone automatically body-safe?
No. Silicone describes a material category, not the complete product. Formulation, coatings, seams, construction, intended use and supporting documentation also matter.
Are TPE and TPR the same material?
Not necessarily. TPE is a broad family of thermoplastic elastomers, while TPR is commonly used as a commercial term for rubber-like thermoplastic materials and may overlap with the wider TPE family. Neither label identifies the exact formulation on its own.
Does borosilicate glass automatically make a toy suitable?
